Starbucks Eastgardens
Who: Starbucks Coffee Australia
What: Starbucks commissioned artist Leia Sidery of Sydney-based artist collective, The Art of Wall, to create a bespoke mural for the Eastgardens shop. The line work style and use of shading are inspired by tattoos, a nod to the well-decorated BRA Boys.
The content was inspired by Starbucks’ nautical history and connections to the seafaring traditions, which provided a natural synergy with the mall’s proximity to Maroubra beach. Leia created her interpretation of the siren, a symbol of beauty, strength, and continuous desire to explore. In the art piece, the siren has surfaced from the sea, and her hair is intermixed with the rolling waves created by the thunderous clouds overhead.
The thunder image is particularly significant. Maroubra is a local Aboriginal word meaning place of thunder.
