Sydney Desalination Pipeline Mural

– Re-Right Collective –

1km-long Aboriginal mural painted on Sydney Desalination Pipeline along Airport Drive in Tempe, NSW.

Tempe, NSW — 2024

A 1-kilometre mural delivered along the Sydney Desalination Pipeline in Tempe, NSW. Curated by Cultural Capital and designed by Dennis Golding and Carmen Glynn-Braun (Re-Right Collective), the project was executed by Indigo Jo and The Art of Wall.

The artwork reflects the lands and seawaters of the Bidjigal, Gadigal and Dharawal peoples, incorporating motifs of shellfish, mangroves, seagulls and wattles. The design was developed in collaboration with young Aboriginal artists Dakota Dixon-Campbell and Wirrin Lowe.

Project Delivery

Over an eight-month period, a four-person team delivered the mural across the above-ground pipeline section adjacent to Airport Drive and Alexandra Canal.

Works included:

  • Comprehensive surface preparation

  • 2 coats primer

  • 2 Monument Black base coats

  • 2 artwork layers

  • 2 anti-graffiti protective coats

The project required sustained coordination across changing seasonal conditions and an exposed industrial environment, with daily management of access equipment, scaffolding relocation and site logistics.

The Art of Wall acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the lands on which we work and create. In Brookvale, we pay our respects to the Gayamaygal people of the Guringai Nation, and across the greater Sydney region, we acknowledge the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation and the many other First Nations communities whose Country we travel through and paint on.
We honour their ongoing connection to land, waters, culture, and storytelling—and extend our respects to Elders past and present.
